Eric Benet “Love & Life”
“Love Patience & Time” is quite an album opener. Eric Benet sets the tone for the
album with an affirmation and a challenge to the listener. He affirms that God’s
love is the source of his strength and joy. He challenges us to look within our own
hearts in times of doubt and have the assurance that with God all things are
possible. This song touches on relevant issues we face today such as war,
feelings of rejection, politics, hope, and change. Musically the groove is nice, easy,
and comforting like a wise grandparent telling stories in a rocking chair while
sipping lemonade on a sunny spring day.
The first single, “You’re the Only One,” immediately takes you back to the classic
Soul/R&B sound like legends The Stylistics, Earth Wind and Fire, The Isley
Brothers. The warmth of the electric piano chords and lush strings complement
Eric’s sweet tenor as he petitions for forgiveness from his former love. No stranger
to duets with incredible female vocalists, “Everlove,” a duet with Terry Dexter, is
sure to be a wedding favorite to usher in the “I do’s” of brides and grooms for years
to come. Not only does Eric sing of spirituality, break ups and make ups of love, but
he also gives us some baby-makers like “Chocolate Legs” and “The Hunger.”
Some other standouts include danceable songs like “Weekend Girl” to get your
two-step on. “Spanish Fly” will surely have you breaking out the dancing shoes for
a sexy Salsa spin and dip.
In today’s R&B world, we often see singers with a reputable track record work with
the “hot” producers/songwriters at the moment. This often takes away from the
artist’s signature sound and true artistic expression in hopes of mainstream
defined success. Eric Benet is a gifted singer and songwriter and he does what he
does best on this album without working with the household name producers,
songwriters, guest rappers, and the Auto-tune effect. Eric and Demonte Posey co-
wrote and co-produced nine of the twelve songs. Two of the songs were co-written
and produced by Eric, Demonte, and George Nash Jr. “Chocolate Leg’s” was
written by Eric and produced by musical genius’ Keith Crouch and John “Jubu”
Smith. “Love & Life” is a collection of mid-tempo to slow grooves that all flow
effortlessly from one song to the next. Eric proves that he still has the vocal chops
and you feel his passion as he sings about the triumphs and tribulations of Love
and Life.
